Why an agent’s personality is not permission
A note on keeping an agent’s identity separate from what it is allowed to do.
An agent can have a name, a role and a way of speaking. That can make it easier to work with, but it should not give the agent permission to do more.
This is one of the boundaries I’m working on in X-Lab.
Keep the two decisions separate
Identity describes the agent. Permissions decide which tools and data it can use. Changing a personality or a role description should not silently change those permissions.
X-Lab keeps agent blueprints in code and applies capability rules separately. The intended behavior can be reviewed alongside the code that runs it.
Still a work in progress
This is a design direction, not a claim that every edge case is solved. X-Lab is still in development. The useful question is whether the system enforces the boundary, not whether the agent sounds trustworthy.
